--- By David Webster --- One or Two? --- Here's my Dust Hill theory. It is well known that Sonic 1 spent around a year and a half in development. Therefore Sega must have spent some time playing around with ideas for zones. It's possible that one of the zones could have been the Dust Hill Zone. If you look at the score and rings counters, you'll see that they are the Sonic 1 style. This is the same on Sonic CD, but look at the lives counter face, it's that same as Sonic 1 but different to Sonic CD, therefore the shot isn't from Sonic CD. Look at the clouds, they are from Green Hill zone, it's possible that Sega intended to use the same sky for both zones, or first created Dust Hill zone and after scrapping it used the sky for Green Hill zone. Also look at the way sonic is jumping. I've heard about a bug in Sonic 1 where you jump without spinning. A possible theory for the magazine showing this shot as a Sonic 2 shot may be that it was originally given the shot as a very early Sonic 1 shot. It later used it before any real Sonic 2 shots were released to make out that they had exclusive Sonic 2 shots when they didn't. [Addition] Just a small addition to my theory. I have confirmed that there is a bug in Sonic 1 where you can jump without spinning. I've captured a shot from Genecyst as proof. The animation frame is the same as that in the Dust Hill shot.
