This
image shows Sonic in Hidden Palace balancing off a step. He's
a little off the edge, so his sprite wasn't adjusted just yet.
This image also shows the Batbot character not found in the
final game. Batbot is found complete in the BETA version of
Sonic 2.

This
shows off more of what was missing from Sonic 2. Again, another
badnik went missing during the production, commonly thought
of as 'Dinobot'. Dinobot is complete in Sonic 2 BETA. For a
slightly larger version, click the image to the side.

Sonic
falling down a tube, which is still seen in Sonic 2 BETA. |

Sonic
is walking down a section that is far to steep for him to walk
back up on, and more interestingly is the Triceratops robot. This
character was not even in The Zone in Sonic 2 BETA, but was later
found after some hard ROM searching with a few animations in the
S2B ROM by Nemesis. The background is also completely different
to anywhere in the S2B ROM.

Also
noticeable in the background of the above image is this odd shape.
This shape was later found by BMF45123 whilst searching through
the S2B ROM, proving that at least some of the data from the old
backdrop was still left.

The
same area was found in Sonic 2 when the found the section of ROM
[but without the graphics] as you can see with this comparison,
thanks to AJ Freda.

An image showing off the animated bridge from the Sonic 2 BETA was
functional at the time of this image. When Sonic walks across it,
each bulb lights up. |

Sonic
walking up a very steep section. This area can be found in Sonic
2 BETA's Hidden Palace Zone, but due to the game physics, Sonic
cannot walk up it as this image wants you to believe. There are
items at the top in Sonic 2 BETA, but they can only be accessed
by debug. Possibly a lift was to be here later on.

The
Hidden Palace Zone icon can actually be found in Sonic the Hedgehog
3! Sonic 3's level select oddly has Sonic 2 level icons, one being
this, obviously belonging to the missing Sonic 2 level. |

Hidden Palace Zone in Sonic 2

You can access the messy Hidden Palace Zone in Sonic 2 by having
a Pro Action Replay device, thanks to Michael Sterns for finding
it. Simply enter in this data:
Code 1 000080:322F
Code 2 000080:322F FFFE10: 0001
Code 3 FFFE1F: 0000

Hidden
Palace Music
The music for Hidden Palace zone still exists on the final cartridge!
If you go to the sound test in options, you can listen to track
#10. This music was not in any other level in the final. Others
have speculated that it could also be track #3, which is used
for the Mystic cave 2 player mode, but track #10 is what plays
during HPZ with an Action Replay, and can also be sped up using
speed boots, while track #3 cannot.
