Sonic 2 Revisions: Megaplay
Submitted by: System16.com
Megaplay is a type of arcade machine which allowed cartridges of specially made Megadrive games to be inserted for play. For each credit, you are given a specific amount of time to play the game. Sonic 2 was one of those games, and is mostly playable under MAME. |
The Megaplay machine was a JAMMA compatible board which allowed special SEGA cartridges to be added into an 8-cart slot, much like the multi-game machines used by NEO GEO boards used in the early nineties. You would insert a credit into the machine, and it would then allow you a certain amount of time to play the game. The timer was counter on a seperate machine altogether, and would prompt for more credits when the timer ran out. |
Once Sonic 2 starts, it will ask in very basic text to press 1p, or 2p if you have two credits or more in. The game is also altered to say "Copyright 1993 SEGA" at the bottom of the title screen. |
Once ingame, you'll notice that the Timer has dissapeared from the HUD, as there is no need anymore. Also, you cannot go into Special Stages and therefore cannot get Chaos Emeralds. |
