This same writing was used in the final, but there are some slight alterations. This is the options menu for the Boss battles, but you'll notice the "???" icon. In the final game the "ALL" button will not appear until you complete everything, but in earlier versions "ALL" would be replaced by "???" until everything was completed.

This is the 2 player option screen used in the final game, but notice that Green Hill Zone is added to the bottom. At one point GHZ must have been usable as a 2 player stage when you got all 180 emblems.
