This article is basically a "rumors" section. It claims SEGA of Japan is working on a game "Virtua Sonic". We can only assume it's Sonic the Fighters. They might have also been talking out of their arse since they also claim the SEGA Graphics library can allow games to run at 65 frames per second :D

This early Japanese scan was the announcement for the game, showing plenty of prototype shots with a very early Casino Night level. According to Big Smile, Hari Hari says:
He is saying that it is 30% of degree of the completion and that we decided only 3 characters.
He says that we will finally decide about 8 characters in all, and he worries that it might be too cruel that children use it because MetalSonic is sharp.
And He says that we are discussing with Sonic Team sometimes about 2P character-color and more.

Here is the announcement for Sonic the Fighters in Sega Saturn Magazine. It shows some early images of the Flying Carpet level, and at the time they were only intending on adding one extra character to the line up instead of two.

This article was in the SEGA Saturn Magazine, giving us a good look as to what the final product would end up being like. It was shown at the AUO show that year, but they were still deciding Ring use and character colours for the 2P modes.

The 'Fighting Game Secrets' handbook has a few pages deticated to Sonic The Fighters, but they're incomplete, making them very basic, prototype movelists.
