Along with Nack, Metal Sonic was also set to return as a boss in Sonic X-Treme. This looks much like a cutscene for the game just before the battle begins, where Metal Sonic is woken from a Frankenstiens Monster like state.

A quick cropped image of Sonic walking around the Metal Sonic field. Supposedly this level showed off numerous reflections, such as Sonics in this image, as well as many other little added effects.

A quick view of the Metal Sonic model. The SEGA Saturn was never all too good with 3D models, and Metal Sonic is no different. Besides the torso, the rest of his limbs seem small or frail, and his mouth area looks a little out of place. A wireframe models shows where most of the Polygons went.

Sonic, wandering around the level. Note the stars flashing around Sonic. They don't appear to have any use whatsoever, unless it's like an invincibility item that Sonic has picked up.

Another image with the Trail of stars following Sonic slowly around the arena. There are also several mines around the area to get into Sonics way.

Metal Sonic seems to be missing from this picture, but notice the markings on the floor. It is as if Metal Sonic is about to shoot a missile at Sonic, similar to the end boss in Sonic 3D Blast.

An image shot of Sonic X-Treme further on in development. A new HUD has been created to take over the very incomplete one [see: Nack boss page]. Sonics icon at the bottom seems to be taken from Sonic 2 when you get a continue. Sonic has also lost all of his rings while Metal Sonic hovers over him. Click on the image for a bigger version.

Metal Sonic is flying around for an attack, also notice how the backdrop has completely changed from the images above. From a Space, almost Death Egg like background to an arena surrounded by tall buildings. Click the image for a larger screenshot.

Metal Sonic charges at Sonic from behind. This image shows just how unfinished the game was at the time, with Metal Sonic's 3D structure breaking up with polygon errors. Notice how these later images do not have Sonic covered in floating stars, and he's able to lose rings? It was most likely to make him be able to defeat him without getting beaten.
