Sonic R: Trial Version was released in a 3 demo pack released in Japan. It consists of a single level: Resort Island.

The title screen is slightly altered to reflect it being a demo.

By pressing start, you will automatically be brought to the character select screen. You will then be able to choose 1 of 4 originally selectable characters.

The level itself is exactly the same as the final version of the game.

You are still able to collect the Chaos Emerald, and still able to collect the 5 Sonic coins. But collecting all 5 coins, you can race against Metal Sonic, like the final.

And surprisingly, you can unlock Metal Sonic and play him through the Resort Island!
